Independent Website Audits
|
| A website audit is rather like a Website MOT. Like the vehicle inspection test, it is a formal independent check that your website is fit for purpose and firing on all cylinders. It will tell you what you are doing well, where you are going wrong (and how to fix it), and new opportunities for improving the usability and effectiveness of your website. |
What are the Benefits? |
| First of all, you will have the reassurance that everything is working properly and that you are making the most of web technology. If not, you will know what needs attending to. Secondly, an audit will help you improve your user experience - encouraging clients to check out what you have to offer, take follow-up action, and afterwards come back for more. Thirdly, you will learn if people can find your website easily, and how to improve your ranking in search engine results. If you are a webmaster, an audit can also be educational - helping you to maintain the quality of what you do in the future. |
What is Audited? |
Category List >> |
| We actually visit your web to audit it. The core of the audit is a checklist of over 400 specific points, arranged under 24 main headings, and about 160 sub-headings. It has been designed to be as objective as possible, and the checklist is constantly under review to reflect best practice. Assessments are mostly made from the point of view of end users. |
Scoring |
Score Sheet >> |
| Most points are simply scored according to whether a particular feature is present/absent, or true/false. Some are however quantitative (e.g. page length), and these are scored against acceptable threshold values. Individual points either pass or fail, but are aggregated for reporting purposes under the headings, giving the number & percentage of sub-categories that passed (e.g. 6 of 8 - 75%). Additional merit points and black marks may also be awarded for things that are exceptionally good or particularly bad. |
| Any points that are not be relevant to your website (e.g. audio content) will be ignored, but mentioned in the results. |
What is in the Web Audit Report? |
Your audit report will include the following:
- A one-page non-technical executive summary of the main good and bad findings, plus a list of the key suggested action points.
- A score sheet, showing how your web has performed in each category.
- A detailed section-by-section report. Any negative points are explained, along with options for fixing them. This is intended for your webmaster or web designer.
- A suggested action plan, listing immediate, medium-term and long-term recommendations.
|
| You will also be entitled to follow-up advice by phone or email. |
Couldn't I Audit it Myself? |
| Yes you could. However, do you have the time? Do you know what to check? Do you have the necessary technical knowledge? Are you too close to your website to spot errors and to be impartial? If you feel confident, then we wish you well. Otherwise, you might prefer to let us do it for you. |
| If you do wish to do it yourself, you could start with our basic website mini-audit. This is a questionnaire covering 20 common problems, which will take you between 10 and 20 minutes to complete. At the end it will give you a score and explanations for any issues found. |
| DIY Mini-Audit >> |
What does it Cost? |
| It is difficult to offer a standard price for a web audit because websites vary so much in size and quality, and require different amounts of work. As a guide, the testing process takes about a day, and writing a full report also takes about a day, at professional rates. |
| These are our basic options: |
| Full Web Audit - Full battery of tests, executive summary, score sheet, detailed report and action plan, plus follow-up support by phone & email. |
| Outline Audit - This also includes the full set of tests, but halves the cost by only providing summary and score sheets, plus discussion of the results and follow-up over the phone. This audit can be upgraded later to a full audit for the difference in cost. |
| Free Mini-Audit - This is the same as our DIY mini-audit, with a follow-up phone call to discuss the outcome. We'll do the mini-audit for you, but if you wish, you can also try it yourself and compare results. |
| Whichever option you choose, we will quote a fixed price beforehand. Audit costs will be discounted against any follow-up contract work. |
| We have special rates for charities and not-for-profit organisations. |
OK. What do I do next? |
| For a free mini-audit, just send your web address and contact details using our Enquiry Form. The same form can be used to enquire about the other website audit options. After an initial look at your website, we will get back to you and discuss your requirements, with no obligation to you. If you decided to proceed, we will then agree the contractual details. |
